Want to learn how to sew and use a machine but haven't a clue where to start? Is that machine still packed away in a box but you really want to get cracking?

This is the ultimate course which teaches you how to master your machine step by step, using easily understandable terms and techniques. By the end of the course you will be filled with sewing confidence, and will have made your own gorgeous cushion cover!

 

Once you have completed this course, you are welcome to move onto our other dressmaking and soft furnishing classes.

This is an evening course over two nights which covers a huge amount of techniques, theory and everything you need to get started sewing the professional way.

You will learn how to understand the machine and how it works, how to thread & sew on a sewing machine with hawkeye precision, then cut and make your first design to take home.

 

What you will be taught in class:

 

  • Threading the machine

  • The bobbin - how it works

  • What the knobs & dials do

  • Sew with precision 

  • How to use seam allowances

  • How to prepare fabric for sewing

  • The Grainline - what this means and why you must take note of it

  • How to read a paper pattern and pin fabric

  • How to use shears to cut - the rules of cutting 

  • Pivoting, mitering techniques

  • How to construct and make a bespoke cushion cover

  • How to finish your design for a premium, store bought look

What you will need to bring with you

  • You bring  a small amount of fabric and trims for your cushion, as follows:

  • 0.5 metres of printed poplin

  • A spool of thread to match the fabric choice

  • Buttons to decorate your design

  • A notebook, pen and mobile phone for recording tricky techniques.

Skill level required to join class

This course is suitable for the complete beginner, no sewing skills are needed.
