Beginner Dressmaking - Alterations

The Essential Guide to Altering & Adapting Clothes

All Day Workshop

Date : Saturday 1st February

Time : 10.00am - 5.00pm

Price : £99.00

Why spend a fortune paying someone else to alter clothes for you when you can do it yourself? Feeling inspired and really want to breathe new life into those styles in your wardrobe? Thinking sustainably - recycling and reworking vintage finds maybe?

Join us for a technique packed day, and be taught the correct way to alter and adapt the pieces you still want to wear!

We show you the easy ways to alter, perfect for anyone who can use a sewing machine.

Techniques taught in class:

  • Sewing on buttons & other fastenings

  • Unpicking

  • Hemming trousers, skirts & dresses

  • Back darts to upcycle or create a fitted blouse / shirt

  • Let out / take in suit trousers

  • Slim trouser legs

  • Take up straps of dresses with lining

  • How to fix a gaping armhole

  • Correct button placement

  • Replace a broken zipper (learn how to use a zipper foot)

You will be given step by step demonstrations by your tutor, and can then practice on sample swatches and your garments in class.

Please bring along two articles of clothing you would like to alter and we will work on these in class. The amount of clothes alterations you couple depend on your sewing skills, and speed on a machine or hand sewing. If you do not complete all alterations, good news - you will leave with lots of tips and guidance on how to finish at home.
