We can teach you all you need to know, it’s never to late to start your sewing journey. 

We begin with garment construction basics - the skills you MUST know to sew beautifully finished and fitted clothes. Learn to sew with a Pro: all our sewing tutors are top degree trained womenswear designers, who have worked in the London Fashion Industry. 

 

We pack an incredible amount of information into this dressmaking course:

 

Theory

  • Learn how to measure the body correctly with accuracy

  • How to select a sewing pattern, how to read the confusion instructions.

  • How to choose the right size pattern for your measurements.

  • How to alter a simple pattern if you are between sizes - to ensure a great fit.

  • Fabric choices - we talk fabrications, weights and handles, with swatches to take home

  • How to pin your pattern correctly to avoid the garment twisting

  • Cutting techniques - cut with millimetre precision, with shears only. No rotary cutters are used in the fashion industry.

  • Warp, weft, grainline. VITAL theory.

 

Sewing skills

  • The overlocker - see how it works with explanations on stitch variations, how to thread it, how the blade works. 

  • How to sew a dart.

  • Seam variations

  • Hem variations

  • Easy closures

  • How to cut facings, and avoid lining your garment

  • Interfacings and why you need them in your designs

  • Hand finishing techniques

  • How to add designer details to ensure that luxe store- bought finish.

  • Tools of the trade, what the professionals use daily and why you need them in your kit

  • The class includes expert instruction to a small class of 6 maximum.

What you will need to bring with you

  • Your sewing machine (we can hire one if needed for a small fee) & Overlocker if you have one

  • Notebook, pen and mobile phone for photos and recording important tips & techniques. 

Skill level required to join class

This class is suitable for those who can use a machine unaided, and can solve basic machine issues with no help from a tutor. You can thread, sew straight lines, and understand seam allowances and have made a few projects e.g.: cushion cover / bags successfully.
